“All of us who work in organizations are the engineers of something, whether it is a team, a project, a department or a mail room. While our derailment may not cause loss of life, it does negatively impact others and our own careers.”

Tim Irwin writes Derailed in two parts. In the first portion, Tim Irwin gives a compelling argument for character in business as he outlines the lives of six business leaders who derailed their own careers. They got off the tracks and could not proceed in their current positions. His research is taken from respected media such as the Wall Street Journal and Business Week. They were men and women he appreciated so tried to give a fair illustration of their lives. Tim tells their stories and the moment of their derailment but not without showing clearly how their character impacted that moment of going off the track. This first half is an easy read seeing the success and failures of others at a distance.

Since this book is about character Dr. Irwin then turns back to the reader reminding us that “a leader is only as good as their character” – and we are nailed. The self examination must begin. As carefully as he outlined the lives of these business leaders he outlines how the reader can avoid them and succeed.

I absolutely loved this book! I took an incredibly long time to review this book; too long in fact. But it caused me to look hard into my life, make some changes and scrutinize who I followed and emulated. As a result of reading Derailed and another book I have made major changes in my business life. So I caution those who read this book …. beware…. this book could change the direction you are going and save your entire career.

Read it with caution! Changes ahead!

Ceremony Venues and the Future: As the official bridal season winds down and Christmas comes to the fore front, I have a chance to pull back and ponder the past season and gear up for the next. Our company married more than 1000 couples. We married them everywhere but most often in hotels, golf courses, restaurants, halls, vineyards, wineries, parks, backyards, chapels, near waterfalls and on beaches.

Everyone did it their way and in a venue they considered unique. What determines that their venue was unique? Shared interests, where couples met, her dream location and his dream location. What is perfect and romantic to one may be completely bizarre to another. Our choices are influenced by popular opinion, family values, one strong voice in our lives, bridal magazines, television and other media. I do believe with all that I read and see that next year couples will be more authentic, more willing to make a splash, state their opinions and leave their mark. What will Tradition look like in the not so distant future? Where will couples choose to be wed and celebrate?

For those who thought marrying within a church was still the tradition well, those figures have changed too. Only 15% of all weddings are performed in church- the other 85% were performed beyond the church walls.

This year I am expecting to see some new locations: maybe the shopping mall, the IAMS dog show at the EX complete with dog ring bearer, on the set of the Theatre Aquarius. Sounds bizarre. Well the days are coming….tradition is changing.

Watch out as you open that next wedding invitation…..hold your gasping.

I did warn you.

Men are as different from women as night is from day…and they are normal. Paula explains how they respond in relationships, how sex is a driving force, what makes them change plus so much more.

The author has spent many years as a therapist listening to men talk. Out of her experience she has written a book for women. Not just married women but mothers, sisters, daughters and friends. Men need women in their lives to respect them and understand them. Men are who they are and too often we women are seeking to change them.

With the guide in the back, this book can provide lots of good discussion for couples. It will help couples understand and appreciate the deep differences between the sexes.

I enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it. The author made me stop and applaud the man I have. I want now to celebrate my husband’s differences. This book has made a profound difference in how I see all men both those close to me and those in business. A must read for all women!

Max tackled a topic that every person who walks the earth encounters daily. Fear. In this author’s style he makes us laugh at ourselves and consider why we hold fear as close as a companion. He also considers the value of living a fearless life. He does this in the light of Scripture. Quoting examples from the Bible and holding it up as the “true north” of life. Every chapter is different as he writes about the many types of fear, including the fear of God.

Max discusses examples from his own life and true examples from the lives of others. Sometimes though his stories or examples become too long and involved with the potential of losing their point and the reader.

Although marketed like a self help book- “….. Envision a day, just one day, where you could trust more and fear less. Can you imagine your life without fear?”- it reads like a drama or series of short stories all connected by this powerful theme.

As a relationship coach and wedding officiant, I am always considering how couples can grow after the wedding. Reading is a great way to share an experience together. I have just finished a book by Andy Andrews called the Noticer.

I would highly recommend this book to couples for deeper thought and discussion. The main character is called Jones. His perspective on life has merit no matter where you live, what your age or occupation. As people we need to consider how we see others and how we react within this world.

The Noticer is a story written from one of the main character’s point of view. Early in the book his life is incredibly impacted by a man called Jones whom he unexpectedly meets at night. Amazing transformations take place as he puts into practice the many things Jones talks to him about. Jones calls it giving perspective to situations. I call it morsels of wisdom.

Over and over I found I needed to put my book down and think about some of the things Jones spoke about. Although this is not a long book much wisdom is revealed as Jones’s perspective is shared. Many lives are changed and all feel grateful and indebted to him. The book comes with a simplified self guide in the back for further thought and discussion.

This woud be would be a great book to read aloud with your spouse. Turn off that television and enjoy the experience and adventure that books can bring to your life. Be intentional about growing in your relationship!

Your wedding ceremony – Who will enjoy it? With more and more ceremonies performed and enjoyed outdoors, couples need to consider who can actually hear the special words they have chosen to say on their wedding day. This summer like every summer couples are choosing golf courses, vineyards, waterfronts and backyards for their wedding ceremonies. A little different than other years the weather has been more of a challenge. The sound of the rain pounding on the tent, high winds on a golf course or the affects of being near water has robbed more guests of hearing the words spoken at ceremonies. “Consider how everyone beyond the first row will hear your I do’s.”

Another thing to consider whether indoors or outdoors, is nerves. Most brides and grooms are not comfortable with speaking to a crowd and they become afraid. Voices lower, words are mumbled again their low tones are not heard. The same can happen to readers, parents and even vocalists. Yes vocalists.

Have your ceremony well miked for the hearing comfort of all of your family and guests. Recently a very old aunt approached me after the wedding and spoke to me about how disappointed she was that she did not hear a single word. Only moments before the whole family had mentioned to me that they were so pleased she was to be there to share in their special day. It was sad she did not realy share in their experience.

Here in Burlington, Ontario, Long and Mc Quade will provide mikes, stands and speakers for a little as $30 and tax for a small group outside and as much as $60.00 and tax for a larger group for the weekend. Set –up is easy. Contact James or Josh to reserve your equipment. Below I have provided their contact information.

As a company that provides our couples with the best in choice and resources, we desire that your day be the best it can be. May you have a wonderful outdoor or indoor wedding this year!

CHOOSING A VEIL: An integral piece of your wedding day ensemble. It sets you apart by letting the world know that you are the bride. Nothing says “bride” quite like a veil… Of course your dream dress will make you look and feel special, but it’s the veil that adds an unmistakable element of glamour and sets you apart from the crowd. Today there are so many chic options that brides who never dreamed of wearing a veil are opting for this once-in-a-lifetime romantic look. Veil trends range from simply modern styles to luxuriously embellished with Swarovski crystals and pearls. Try a timeless classic: a simple blusher paired with a single-tiered veil (short, medium or long, the choice is yours). Or go for the drama of a cathedral veil. Whether you’re getting married in a formal setting or a casual ceremony on the beach, a long flowing veil is sure to create a striking image… and amazingly beautiful photos. There are many variations in veil length, shape, color, edging, and embellishment, so we are here to help you make sense of it all. Creating the perfect look is as easy as 1-2-3. 1. Choose from a variety of lengths and shapes 2. Select the level of embellishment that’s right for you 3. Combine your veil ensemble with the perfect headpiece

1. THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT Veils come in several lengths, from short and sweet to long and flowing: Blusher veil: To add a hint of formality to a longer veil, a lightweight tulle blusher is traditionally worn over the bride’s face during the ceremony. It is customary for the groom or the father of the bride to flip it back, revealing the bride’s lovely face. The blusher is typically removed for the reception, creating a whole new look Short veil: Lightweight and comfortable, the shorter veil is a fun option that adds a modern touch of whimsy to dresses, from tea-length styles to long sheath gowns. Elbow length veil: Endlessly versatile and easy to wear, elbow-length veils are designed to complement just about any gown style, offering a modern twist on the timeless tradition. Fingertip veil: This glamorous style extends to the fingertips to create an elongated silhouette. The sheer effect coordinates easily with most gowns and settings, from simple to elaborate. Chapel/Cathedral veil: The most dramatic and popular veil, the Cathedral length cascades to the floor in true fairytale fashion. This luxurious style creates an elongated silhouette and complements all bridal designs, from an elaborate ball gown to a modern sheath. Unadorned long, narrow styles are the hottest trend for simply chic or modern affairs. Shaping up From oval to square, veils take on a shape all their own. For example, the exceptionally romantic, flowing mantilla, which consists of lace or lace-trimmed tulle, has a circular shape. Blushers are often square, while short or elbow length veils are typically oval. Fingertip veils are shaped like a teardrop or cape. Chapel and cathedral veils are long and narrow. Try each look to see which looks best with your face shape and gown style.

2. IT’S ALL IN THE DETAILS Beautiful Embellishments Veils can be adorned with Swarovski crystals, pearls, beading or lace. Many of the veils in our collection are available exclusively at David’s Bridal and offer embellishments that complement specific gowns or make any gown look even more stunning. The Cutting Edge The edging, or trim, of a veil can add an interesting design element. Some veils have a simple raw edge or sleek piping for a contemporary look. Others boast elegant beading, classic satin edging, romantic ribbon accents or lace details. Color Me Pretty Veils have always come in various shades of white and ivory to blend perfectly with individual bridal gowns, but now you also have the option of colored edging or beading detail. David’s offers exclusive veils trimmed in beautiful hues that coordinate with the latest color-accented bridal dresses. Luxurious Lace Lace is one of the hottest bridal trends, thanks to its uniquely romantic and elegant qualities. Whether your gown features lace details or you’ve chosen a simple design, a lace-accented veil will add the perfect touch of glamour. Or try a vintage-inspired veil with embroidery that mimics lace. Simple Elegance To complement the sophisticated styling of newer gown trends like the mermaid or sheath silhouette, we offer a selection of simply modern veils. Choose a long and narrow veil for your walk down the aisle, and replace it with mid-length veil for a whole new look at your reception.

3. MAKE A MATCH Take note of our many headpiece options to find the combination that works best with your wedding style. For example, if you’ve chosen a glamorous gown and an up-do hairstyle, add sparkling hair jewels (pins or a comb) and wear your veil below the bun. The look is ultra chic and modern, and it allows you to easily remove the veil after the ceremony. What better way to make a grand entrance at the reception! With so many types of veils and headpiece options, you may appreciate some further guidance on how to put it all together. Let our bridal consultants help you to create the perfect combination.

As the bridal season swings into full gear and I am doing more of the ceremony planning with my couples, I am mindful of the important words that will expressed between my brides and grooms. As their wedding officiant, I am also mindful of the things I will speak as I give my Motivational Moment. In our company, we always take a moment or two to encourage our couples in their journey.

Tonight when thinking through one of my talks, I came across this video called “Present like Steve Jobs’. When you hear Steve, you will notice his expressions are simple, his passion is huge and his presence is outstanding.

What does Steve Jobs have to do with bridal season. He has encouraged this wedding officiant to keep it simple, speak it passionately and her job will be done well. Tonight I have been inspired! Thanks Steve!
